MINI SQUASH
Mini Squash is a structured 3 level program aimed at ages 5 to 11 and offers an ideal
introduction to the sport, covering co-ordination, agility and balance, fundamental in the
athletic development of children. Each stage focuses on 6 different aspects, Technique,
Tactics, Movement, Competition, Knowing the Game, Lifestyle.
Level 1
FUNdation
A squash court is not needed for this first stage of Mini Squash which is vital to the
building of skills and confidence. The emphasis is very much on developing key fundamental
skills including movement and co-ordination while being introduced to the basic elements of
the game. Activities include ball rolling, throwing and catching, racket grip and basic
racket skills.
Level 2
Improver
In this second stage young players are introduced to playing on a full court. The ball used
for this level is bigger, bouncier and slower than a traditional ball giving the player
more time to learn and play basic strokes. Activities include practice of basic shots such
as drives and volleys, movement and fun games.
Level 3
PRO
This prepares children for the full game. Using equipment appropriate to age and ability,
players learn more about good technique and tactical awareness while gaining a more
realistic experience of squash. Activities include practice of serving, introduction to the
drop shot and angles and competitive games.
A Mini Squash Passport is available to record, via a ‘Squashie stamp’, each individual
player’s achievements as they progress through each level.
JUNIOR DEVELOPMENT AWARDS
For the older children, England Squash run a program suitable for ages 9 to 18. The scheme
is structured into 10 key stages, each focussing on a different aspect of the game.
Coaching sessions consist of solo practice, development of shot technique and tactics,
competitive practice and conditioned games.
It focuses on new skills and fun tournaments. Sessions are targeted to the appropriate
level of ability and require the use of a squash court.
We can cater for private or group sessions in either after school or lunchtime clubs or as
a curriculum based program. England Squash are keen to promote this sport, and many schools
are currently including squash in their sports program recognising that the sport develops
not only racket skills and competitiveness but also physical fitness. Mini Squash does not
require a squash court and has been specifically designed to be played in a sports or
school hall using a portable wall. There is an award scheme, which allows pupils to keep a
record of their progress.
