About Guildford
Guildford, the historic and bustling County Town of Surrey, is also the administrative headquarters of the South East England Region. The population of Guildford town is approximately 68,000 and some 130,000 people live in the Borough as a whole. The ancient town of Guildford straddles the River Wey and boasts a cathedral, the University of Surrey, a 12th century Norman castle keep, 2 main line railway stations, a 17th century Jacobean almshouse known as Abbot's Hospital, a museum (housed in another beautiful 17th century building) displaying life and industry in Surrey from the Iron Age to the Middle Ages, the Guildhall dating from the 16th century, a public school (The Royal Grammar), and many other interesting and historic buildings. The towns attractions include first class shopping, entertainment, restaurants and sights to see and visit, supported by 10 car parks close to the town centre and excellent Park & Ride facilities. There is also a central Tourist Information Centre. Guildford is easily accessible being situated just off the A3 approximately 9 miles southwest of junction 10 of the M25. Apart from the many major shops and businesses, which also include banks, estate agents, travel agents, solicitors and other specialists, there are numerous places to eat (we counted about 100!). There are restaurants, cafes, bars, pubs and coffee shops etc., to suit all tastes and all pockets. There are two theatres, including the famous Yvonne Arnaud, and a 9-screen cinema complex. There is an abundance of accommodation in and around Guldford ranging from 4-star hotels to homely bed & breakfast, inns and self-catering.
